
Rhys Chambers is a Musical Director and Composer based in the North East of England. Primarily working in the worlds of Film Music and Musical Theatre, his music is described as a mix between electronic and orchestral. Rhys’ largest work to date is an ongoing Musical Theatre project entitled The L Word. This is a collaborative project with partners Dan Johnson, Chelsea Wood and Richard Ludlow. Aside from this, Rhys regularly writes stand-alone songs for Musical Theatre with the aim of producing a concept album. His music for Film incorporates elements of orchestral writing, electronic techniques and extra-musical features. Rhys has also composed music for a range of other genres. These include his Icarus Trio (2018), a programme piece that incorporates microtones, Roll the Dice (2016), a work of Aleatoric music in which musicians randomly generate their notes, and Dreaming of War (2023), a piece for chamber orchestra which was premiered by the Royal Northern Sinfonia at The Glasshouse International Centre for Music. He has also composed a range of solo works for the Piano, as well as an ongoing selection of Lullabies (2022-). Rhys has his own home studio in which he utilises software such as Logic Pro to produce his own work.
Born in South Shields, Rhys Chambers studied at Durham University, where his teachers included Eric Skytterholm Egan, James Weeks and Nick Collins; before studying for his Master’s degree through The Open University. He also completed a PGCE in Secondary School Education at Sunderland University, qualifying as a teacher in 2020. Rhys has supported his composition work with various peripatetic and full-time teaching posts. He often works as a musician in pit bands for local theatres, performing on Piano, Bass Guitar, Drums as well as selected Brass and Woodwind instruments.
As well as his composing and teaching commitments, Rhys Chambers is the Director of Music of Dryburn Theatrical Workshop, a theatre-based group for adults, as well as being a legacy member of pop band The Waiters. As a musicologist, he has written extensively on the subjects of Music Aesthetic, Theory & Analysis and Historical Musicology.
